I'm not good at combining images either but I do know you need to have one image in each layer (so two layers). Then, you need to lower the opacity in the top one so the bottom layer shows through. Or another method is to use the brush tool and change it to erase and by a lower opacity. Then, when you use the brush, it will chage the opacity of certian parts of the image and allow the bottom layer to show through.

If you play around with it, I'm sure all this will make more sense.
