Hi Parasnake
the pen tool isn't too hard to use once you get use to it. All it needs is a bit of practice.
1) First select the pen tool (make sure its on these settings) look
here
2) This is the easy bit, draw a straight line
here
3) Select the direct select tool

4) Click on the path you just drew (direct select still selected)
5) Right click the centre of the path and select add anchor point which sould look like
this.
6) Drag down and just have a general play, like
this.
